An MRI of the prostate involves special imaging that aims to find suspicious areas of the prostate which may indicate cancer, and may need to be sampled (biopsied) for analysis by a pathologist. Currently, an MRI cannot be totally relied upon to exclude intermediate to high grade prostate cancer. To avoid having repeat scans, it is important to note that the MRI is a specialised investigation and you will be referred to by your urologist’s preferred providers for this investigation. After discussing the findings of the MRI with you, your urologist will usually perform a prostate biopsy, using the information in the MRI to guide the locations for sampling.
