Ureteroscopy & PYELOSCOPY

What is ureteroscopy?

Ureteroscopy is the use of a fine telescope to enter the upper urinary tract so that stones can be treated or biopsies can be taken. Once the stone is reached it can then be fragmented with a laser.

Are the stone fragments removed?

Often stone fragments are too small to be grasped and removed but sometimes a larger fragment can be removed with the assistance of a wire basket. A fragment can be sent to the lab to analyse it’s composition.

WHAT IS A PYELOSCOPY?

A pyeloscopy is a procedure using a pyeloscope which enables a surgeon to reach the inner portions of the kidney to treat stones located in the kidney. A pyeloscope is a flexible telescope with ports through which fine surgical instruments are inserted to reach the stones being treated.

DOES A STENT NEED TO BE REINSERTED AFTER URETEROSCOPY OR PYELOSCOPY?

Sometimes a temporary stent will need to be inserted after surgery, but this is usually for patient comfort or safety.

Laser Lithotripsy involves using green light laser to fragment kidney and ureteric stones to facilitate easier passage of the stones.

That will be done under general anesthetic and will require a possible stent insertion post operative.
